There are lots of delicious Shishito Recipes!
Shishitos are great sweet peppers to grow in the garden as they are fast growing so they are one of the first peppers to harvest, and then they just keep producing all season long. They are one of the easiest peppers to grow, and are great for beginner gardeners. Shishitos grow happily in pots, too. You can pick them often to eat fresh or make a variety of dishes with them. Here are a few of our favorite Shishito Recipe ideas:
- Sautéed Shishitos - in a hot cast iron pan, add oil (olive oil or sesame oil) and add whole Shishitos, sprinkle with salt, and fry until blistered. Add diced garlic if desired, as garlic's robust flavor complements the sweetness of shishito peppers. You can also sprinkle a little soy sauce on it at the end for a punch of unami!
- Shishito Breakfast Potatoes – dice and cook potatoes in a cast iron pan with olive oil, cover with lid for first 10-15 minutes then flip, and if potatoes are soft, leave lid off and cook until the other side is crispy. Chop Shishitos then add to the potatoes and fry until sizzling. Add more flavor with green onions, garlic, garlic chives, and herbs such as parsley, cilantro, oregano, dill or sage as desired!
- Salad - add chopped Shishitos to any salad!
- Pickled Shishitos - add sliced Shishitos to a clean jar, then boil half vinegar, half water, and 1 teaspoon of salt and pour brine over Shishitos. Store in fridge. Add garlic cloves or mustard seeds if desired.
- Tempura Shishitos - dip Shishitos in whipped egg yolk, then dip in a flour mix with 3/4 cup of flour and 2 tablespoons of corn starch. Fry in oil in a pan and serve.
- Eat them fresh off the plant! They have a surprising savory flavor right off the plant.

Shishitos' flavor shines when charred in a cast iron pan with some olive oil and salt.

Shishito seeds are super easy to grow! Did you know that they turn red when fully ripe? They are most often picked green, but red Shishitos are delicious, too!
Can you eat the stems of Shishito peppers?
Yep, the stems are edible! With Shishitos, the seeds, stems and entire pepper are edible. The stems are usually left on when blistering whole Shishitos. In fact, stems are often used as a handle to toss the entire pod into the mouth!
What is special about Shishito peppers?
Shishito peppers are one of the tastiest and easy to grow sweet peppers. They are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, and can help prevent cell aging and maintain the health of the skin, blood vessels, and eyes and boost the immune system. Shishitos, while considered a savory specialty pepper, sometimes a pod will have some capsaicin, the spicy component of peppers – so one in every 10-20 Shishitos will pack a little heat!
