Easy Growing Instructions
Start your Tomatillo Verde seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost, or sow directly outdoors when soil warms. Plant seeds 1/4" deep, thinning to 24" apart after germination. These surprisingly easy-to-grow plants thrive with basic care:
- Harvest when husks split and fruit turns medium green
- Water regularly to keep soil moist
- Plant at least 2-3 plants together for proper pollination
- Protect young plants from frost with simple covers

These tomatillos are easy to grow, and produce nice large tomatillos that are delicous in salsa verde! I also like to add them to soups like green chile and even to red salsas to add more flavor and a hint of sweetness. Make sure to grow at least two plants for the most tomatillos! I also like to provide them with a cage so I can keep the plants from sprawling on the ground. They grow great in large pots too, we have them in a couple of big pots on the patio. It's fun to see the bees buzzing around the yellow blooms. The husks will be empty at first, so just wait until the tomatillo fills out the husk more (and/or turns yellow) for the best tasting ripe tomatillos. Wash them well after harvesting as they have a sticky/greasy coating underneath the husk, I usually put them in a bowl of water and scrub them a bit with my hands to get most of it off. Then, I use a food processor and add tomatillos, garlic, any hot pepper like jalapenos, hot green chiles, or habaneros, plus a bunch of cilantro and salt and pepper, then mix them up and then add some diced white or green onions for one more quick pulse and voila! The best salsa verde! We grow these every year. We also de-husk them, wash and dry them and then store them whole in a container in the freezer for winter use. Thanks for the excellent seeds!
I like to know If cant plant the tomatillo seed on winter time?
We have found that tomatillo seeds overwinter nicely and will sprout when the weather warms up in the spring, so sure, you could sow the seeds in the fall. In fact, we have lots of volunteer tomatillo seedlings every spring where tomatillos had fallen in the fall and left for 'reseeding' some plants for the following year. The seedlings seem to be slightly frost hardy as they sprout and do well even if we have some cold spells in late spring.
You can also grow tomatillos as perennials in zones 10 and 11, so if you're in a climate that has warm weather year-round, you can grow them year-round!
