Growing Tomatoes in Pots

Growing Tomatoes in Pots

Want to grow more tomatoes but don't have room? Then grow tomatoes in pots! We do recommend larger pots – half whiskey barrels or pots of that size are best for most regular tomatoes. If you're using grow bags, a 20 gallon or more grow bags or 20 inch deep and wide pots or larger is best for most tomato varieties. Make sure to place them in full sun and provide support for them as they grow taller.

That said, you can also grow tomatoes in smaller pots... read on...

Growing Tomatoes in Pots - Three good varieties

What type of tomatoes do well in pots?

While you can pretty much grow any tomato in a large pot (don't forget to provide trellises or obelisks for support), there are also tomato varieties that were bred to be smaller in plant size and do well in pots. You can even grow them with flowers, herbs and/or peppers to have a colorful veggie pot!

They are ideal for patios, decks, porches and smaller spaces. These grow great in a 12-15" basket or larger patio pots – just make sure to keep them consistently watered.

Is it okay to grow tomatoes in pots?

Of course! But, keep in mind that if you're growing a large tomato variety, you need to use as big of a pot as possible so they can grow deep roots and there is room in the pot to provide support such as a trellis, obelisk, cage or other support. Tomatoes tend to grow lanky and providing support is crucial. Or, skip the suppport, and grow our Tumbling Tom Tomato which likes to tumble out of pots with it's cascading growth habit.

You should also make sure to use a well draining potting mix (no garden soil). Watering consistently is also important with pots, you will likely have to water tomato pots more frequently than tomatoes grown in the ground. Another thing to consider is using organic fertilizer more regularly to keep your potted tomato plants growing healthy and strong.

Conserve Nutrients in your Tomato Pots:
Add mulch and bio char to your pots to hold in nutrients!

Nutrients easily wash out of container-grown tomatoes. To prevent this, apply a 2-6" layer of organic mulch such as straw, aged grass clippings, or shredded leaves on top of your soil. Mulch acts as a protective blanket that slows watering, cools the soil, and prevents rapid evaporation. Mulch also blocks direct sunlight, which can bake bare potting mix, which destroys beneficial microbes. As mulch blocks the sun, it also helps keep the soil ecosystem cool and hydrated. For long-term retention of nutrients, mix biochar into your potting mix near the bottom of the pot. And a huge side benefit: as organic mulch breaks down, it enriches the soil by sustaining beneficial microbes and releasing nutrients, ultimately boosting your tomato plant's health.

What tomatoes grow best in 5-gallon buckets?

Pick tomato varieties that have smaller plant size such as Martino's RomaCelebrity or varieties labeled dwarf such as the Tiny Tim Tomato or Tumbling Tom Yellow tomato.
