This one is so fun to grow! It has very unique foliage that is mottled with green and white. When the young plant is about 12 weeks old the solid green foliage begins to mottle. This mottling continues to the peppers that are variegated with stripes. The 2" curving pendant fruits look a little like swimming fish. Peppers turn from white with green stripes to orange with brown stripes and finally to a mature solid red. Grown for its ornamental value. View all of our Ornamental Peppers »

In the 1940s seeds were received from Horace Pippin, a black folk painter in West Chester, Pa. The peppers came from Baltimore, where they had been employed by black caterers to make white paprika for the cream sauces then popular with fish and shellfish cookery. The white and green foliage and the striped pods derive their unique look from the same recessive genes that cause albinism. Capsicum annuum     (90 days) Heirloom - Open-pollinated - Non-GMO

Heat Level: Very Hot  Scoville 5,000 - 30,000

~ Packet contains 10 seeds.

In early spring, start seeds indoors 8 weeks prior to warm nightly temperatures. Place the seeds in sterile media and cover 1/4” deep. Provide 85°F bottom heat, bright light and keep moist at all times. Seeds will germinate in 7 - 21 days. Transplant seedlings into pots and grow until there are 6 true leaves on the plant. Plant them directly into rich soil, 30” apart or into large 5-gallon containers. Harvest chiles when they are colorful and striped. If left on the plant the peppers will turn red at full maturity.

All of our seeds are GMO-free.

Seeds are growing.

Very healthy seeds. Excellent quality. Sprouted in 2 weeks. S&H for one tiny pkg was a bit steep.

Tons of peppers

These were cool looking plants and they produced a ton of pods. Will grow again next year.

variegated and bright

We loved growing these! Easy to germinate and very strong seedlings. Would have gotten all 5 stars but it just wasn't as prolific of a producer as some of the other hot peppers we grew. All fruit had beautiful stripes which is why we picked these in particularly!

Beautiful foliage

Lovely leaves, white mottling. The peppers themselves while edible are v v hot and do not have a lot of flavour. If you're looking to add a hit of heat they come in handy.

Gorgeous plant and pepper

We are in zone 8a, Georgia, USA. Germination rate was good, but these were slower to flower and make than the jalapeños or cayenne. This is an heirloom pepper with quite a story, but the plants themselves were gorgeous. Honestly, the variegated patterns were so pretty they would look great anywhere. I am hoping to grow more of these next year. Heat level was markedly warmer than your average peppers. I put some in southern vinegar pepper sauce.
