Mild Peppers to Grow

There are so many great mild peppers to grow for people who don't want a lot of spice or any spice in their food. You can grow completely sweet peppers with 0 Scovilles (no heat), or you can grow mild pepper seeds with just a dash of spice. If you have issue growing Bell Peppers, try Gypsy Peppers! These are super productive sweet pepper plants that are easy to grow in any garden. They taste good!! No bitterness that you can sometimes get in bell peppers. These pepper plants produce a ton of very flavorful peppers – Gypsy peppers are one of our new favorites! We grow them every year now. Great for putting on salads, stir fries, adding to burritos or tacos, stuffing & grilling, pickling, you name it. 

What do Gypsy peppers taste like?

Gypsy peppers have a wonderful sweet and bright citrusy flavor, many people like these peppers better than bell peppers! Gypsy peppers are not spicy at all, they are entirely sweet, and have a juicy crunch with thin skin – they are delicious to eat.

Make sure to grow our Bell Mini Mix peppers for small colorful snack size peppers are sweet, crunchy, and full of flavor. It is fun to watch them grow and turn from green to their intended color of red, yellow, or orange. These are great for fresh eating in salads or on sandwiches, and can also be used for stir fries, roasting, or stuffing and baking! The sturdy 24“plants produce all summer and grow well in containers. Great for adding to your lunch box for a healthy, crispy, sweet treat!

 

Chocolate Bell Pepper

0 Scoville Heat Units - Sweet!

This sweet chocolate-colored bell pepper has wonderful flavor. One of the big reasons it's one of our favorite mild peppers is that it is a super early pepper (our earliest!), with some of your first peppers being ready to harvest around 57 days. The plants produce lots of 3-4" peppers, and they tolerate cool nights. The color ripens from green to dark brown on the outside and brick-red flesh on the inside - quite pretty when sliced or diced and added to salads or stir fries. Be sure to try this short season pepper in your garden this year and enjoy the abundance of dark chocolate peppers. 

 

Mild Peppers to Grow: Shishito Peppers

This is one of our favorite mild peppers to grow, hands down is the Shishito Japanese heirloom sweet pepper. We have this mild sweet pepper growing in our garden every year. It has no heat, though every so often one turns out spicy, so be wary if you're heat sensitive and don't pop the whole thing in your mouth! Of course those of us who like spice don't mind. ;) Popular among restaurants and diners, it has great flavor and is super easy to prepare by stir frying with some oil and salt. The 3” - 4" long pods are produce early and then all summer long on very productive 24" tall plants. Easy to grow in full sun and fertile soil. These mild peppers are really great for container gardening.

If you like mild peppers with some spice, be sure to check out the flavorful Beaver Dam pepper. This old Hungarian heirloom pepper is mildly hot and tastes similar to a bell pepper but with a nice hint of heat. The mildly spicy horn-shaped peppers start off bright green and mature to red when ripe. You can pick them green or wait until they're a bit more sweet and flavor filled and turn red when they are completely ripe. The compact plants are great for growing in containers. These mildly spicy peppers are perfect for stuffing, in traditional goulash, or for magnificent pickled peppers.

This famously sweet Spanish heirloom pepper is sure to please all gourmet gardeners! Padron peppers are prized for their mild flesh and rich flavor. Padron peppers make delicious pop in your mouth appetizers. Like Shishitos, these mild peppers will mostly be sweet, but every so often one may be very spicy! A nice surprise for those who like some heat. Easy to grow in containers, these are also great for short seasons as they start to ripen in just 65 days and continue producing these delicious sweet Padron peppers for the rest of the season.

Mild peppers to grow: Piquillo Pepper

Piquillo Peppers

0-500 Scoville Heat Units - Mild

You may have seen the Spanish Piquillo pepper marinated in jars at specialty food stores – it is a delicacy! This sweet pepper with modest heat – nearly imperceptible – has both smoky and tart undertones. Similar to Champagne, or Hatch Chiles, these peppers have a  European PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) and cannot be commercially grown outside its Navarra, Spain region... so you can't find them grown commercially locally here in the states, but we have these home garden seeds available for you to grow so you can experience their deliciousness. We like to roast them and marinate Piquillo peppers with olive oil and sea salt. You can also add sliced Piquillo peppers to your salads, or serve them them with mozzarella, burrata or feta. Be sure to grow a uniquely delicious mild Piquillo peppers in your garden, you won't regret it! 

Mild peppers to grow: Anaheim Sonora Pepper

600 Scoville Heat Units - Mild

If you like green chile but want gentle, mild heat, the Sonora Anaheim pepper is one of  our favorite chile plants to grow! With very mild heat and large size growing up to 10" in length, you'll fall in love with this flavorful chile. It is perfect for roasting with thick meaty walls, and is a great first mild pepper choice to grow for New Mexico pod-type green chile flavor. The Sonora pepper can be eaten raw, cooked, or roasted and peeled, and is great when stuffed with meat and cheese for chile rellenos. It has just a little bit of spice and will get your tastebuds craving more!

 

Poblano Peppers

500 - 1,000 Scovilles - Mild Pepper

You're in for a treat if you grow poblanos! They make some of the best rellenos because of their mild heat and heart-like shape. When smoked or dried they are referred to as Anchos, which are used in making many sauces like mole. This mild heirloom pepper is easy to grow, and are good for short seasons as they start to harvest in about 75 days, and keep harvesting with good yields for the rest of the season. They are perfect for those who want a flavor-packed mild chile that is not too spicy.  We also have a couple other Poblano pepper varieties so be sure to try them all!

Mild Peppers to Grow: Mild Hatch ChileMild Hatch Chile - NM 6-4

Of course this Mile Peppers to Grow List cannot be complete without the Mild Hatch Green NM 6-4 chile! This excellent variety has been the standard for open-pollinated mild green chile. The mild pods are 6" long with thick fleshy walls and grow on 30” plants. You can add a large amount of these mild Hatch Green chiles to recipes for delicious flavor and aroma without the burn of the hotter varieties. This is the most popular green chile to grow because of its mild heat content – plus it matures early and grows well in short seasons!

1,000-1,500 Scoville Heat Units

Another wonderful mild green chile you can grow in your garden is the Giuzeppi Chile! This pepper is the perfect choice for people who love the green chile flavor but don't care for the heat. This is the mildest variety of Hatch chile you can grow. The giant chiles range from 8- 12” long, and they grow on extra heavy yielding 30-36” tall plants. It's also super fast growing so it's great for short seasons, starting to harvest in about 75 days.
