Customer question: I finally have cucumbers coming in, with lots more to come this week. What is the best way to store them until Sunday (over 4 days away) when I can pickle them so they stay as crisp/fresh as possible? Thanks for any advice!
Here's our advice for storing cucumbers for a few days so they are as fresh as possible when you pickle them:
- Wash and dry: After you harvest your cucumbers, rinse them gently under cold water and remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean towel. Many people recommend to cut off the blossom end.
-
Store whole cucumbers in a sealed container in the fridge: We like to use glass containers instead of plastic bags. You can also store cucumbers in the refrigerator crisper, but don't store them with other fruit like bananas, apples, melons, avocados, and tomatoes – these produce ethylene which can speed the ripening and softening of cucumbers, eventually leading to spoilage.
Then, when you have enough cucumbers to pickle, be sure to make our Spicy Pickles Recipe! You can make Spicy Refrigerator Spicy Pickles or make Canned Spicy Pickles for shelf-stable pickles for winter storage and enjoying. Happy pickling!
