Fan for seedlings

Fan for seedlings

Is a fan necessary for seedlings?

A fan definitely helps prevent damping off, and encourages your seedlings to be much stronger and more stout (they won't get as leggy with a light breeze!)

An oscillating fan simulates natural breezes that seedlings don't get when growing indoors. You don't have to run it all the time, but it definitely helps seedlings to have some movement and air circulation every day.

How long should you leave a fan on your seedlings?

You can also do this for just a few hours a day, it doesn't have to be on 24/7.  You'd be surprised that leggy seedlings are just as common from the lack of movement as it is from lack of light! If you have leggy seedlings under lights, it could be that they need a breeze (or you can also brush them daily with your hands) to encourage them to grow more stout with thicker stems – reducing legginess!

Do fans dry out plants?

Yes, a fan can dry out your seedlings faster, so we like to keep it on for just a few hours a day. Keep a close eye on seedlings and once the seedling mix starts to dry out, make sure to add water as needed. That said, don't keep seedlings in soggy conditions, they'll drown!

What are the signs of root rot?

Root rot can happen in soggy conditions, so avoid overwatering and let the mix dry out slightly between watering. Peppers especially hate to have soggy roots, and will start turning yellow and their growth will be stunted if they are drowning in water.

Will a fan help an overwatered plant?

Yes, a fan can help dry out the soil/growing mix if you have overwatered them.
