This is the popular Chicago pickled pepper that is eaten on hot dogs and sandwiches. It is an essential condiment on a Chicago-style hot dog alongside neon relish. They are not eaten raw, because of their very thick pods. When pickled the pepper will soften in the vinegar and keep its shape and some texture. Enjoy the spicy crunch when placed whole on a hot dog.

A Sport pepper is a cultivar of the Capsicum annuum species, most famous for being an essential topping on an authentic Chicago-style hot dog.

  • Appearance: Small, slender, green peppers about 1.5 to 2 inches long with thin skins.

  • Preparation: Typically served whole and pickled in a vinegar-based brine rather than fresh.

  • Flavor Profile: Tangy, vinegary, and sharp with a distinct crunch.

Heat Level: Medium-hot, measuring roughly 6,000 to 8,000 on the Scoville scale. Can be hotter than a jalapeño, but comparable to a serrano pepper.

Cultivation: Plants are compact, bush-type varieties that grow around 2 feet tall, making them ideal for small gardens and container growing.

Harvesting: They are prolific yielders, producing pods that point upward toward the sun as they grow rather than hanging down.

Similar pickled peppers are serrano peppers or pepperoncini for the closest culinary substitutes for heat, bite, and acidity.

Origins: While heavily associated with Chicago street food, the pepper variety originally hails from the Southern United States.
