Watering peppers correctly is important. Here are our top tips: -
Water Deeply & Less Frequently: Instead of a light splash every day, water deeply 1 to 2 times a week so the moisture reaches deep into the root zone.
-
The Finger Test: Stick your finger 1 to 2 inches into the soil before watering. If the soil at that depth feels dry, it's time to water; if it still feels damp, hold off.
-
Adjust for Climate & Heat: During mid-summer heatwaves or dry spells, outdoor pepper plants (especially those in containers) may need more frequent watering to prevent wilting.
-
Avoid Overwatering: Peppers hate "soggy feet." Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes and can cause yellowing leaves, root rot, blossom drop, and stunted growth. Make sure the soil or potting mix is well-draining, and if growing in pots, that there are sufficient drainage holes.
- Mulch Around the Base: Adding a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch (such as straw, wood chips, or leaves) around the base helps lock in moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
